When a drain backs up or runs slow, the first instinct is usually to call for a drain cleaning. But not all drain cleaning is the same, and the method used matters more than most homeowners realize. The two most common approaches are drain snaking and hydro jetting, and while both can clear a blockage, they accomplish very different things. Understanding the difference helps you make a better decision and avoid paying for a solution that will not last.
What Drain Snaking Does and Does Not Do
A drain snake is a long, flexible cable with a cutting head that is inserted into the pipe and rotated to break through a blockage. It is fast, effective for simple clogs, and appropriate for many situations, especially when the problem is a localized obstruction like a hair clog in a bathroom drain or a small root intrusion near the surface. The limitation of snaking is that it punches a hole through the blockage rather than removing it entirely. Grease, scale, and built-up debris on the pipe walls remain after snaking, and blockages in those lines tend to recur faster than in cleaner pipes.
What Hydro Jetting Accomplishes
Hydro jetting uses a specialized nozzle attached to a high-pressure hose to blast water through the pipe at pressures that scour the interior walls clean. A thorough hydro jetting job removes not just the immediate blockage but the buildup that caused it, including grease coating the inside of kitchen drain lines, mineral scale in older pipes, and root material that snaking may have only partially cleared. The result is a pipe that flows like new rather than one that is just marginally better than it was before.
When Each Method Is Appropriate
Snaking is the right choice for simple, localized clogs in residential drain lines. It is faster, less expensive, and perfectly adequate for the situation. Hydro jetting is the better option when a line has recurring backups despite previous snaking, when a camera inspection reveals significant buildup on pipe walls, or for commercial properties where grease accumulation in kitchen drain lines is an ongoing maintenance issue. It is also commonly used as a preparatory step before pipe lining, to ensure the existing pipe is clean before the liner is installed.
